Consultation:
London Borough of Sutton is considering installing a motorcycle barrier on the Spencer Road Entrance at Watercress Park to help prevent unlawful use by motorbikes and we are interested in hearing your views. The barriers are designed to allow pedestrians and those using mobility scooters and wheelchairs to enter but to stop motorcycles from gaining access.
We are aware that motorbikes regularly access the site via the Spencer Road entrance which can cause anti-social behaviour and safety issues. As part of the Council's commitment to improving the situation for local residents we propose to install an inhibitor gate.

Camcycle's time and energy is consistently taken up removing exclusionary barriers (e.g. Biomedical Campus, A14 active travel bridges, Warren Road). We need to consider long-term ways to prevent new barriers going in and remove existing ones which prevent people of all ages and abilities cycling.

The new shared path that runs parallel to Severalls Lane has obstructive chicane barriers and cyclist dismount signs where the path crosses the drive to Whitehouse Farm.
South Lynn is infested by barriers that cause unsuspecting cyclists to crash into them, often causing damage and injury. Some of them have visible crash-damage to their paint work.
There are two different styles present in South Lynn: tight slaloms and handlebar-grabbers. Most of them are pointless and can never stop any motorcycles because they can just access the routes from other points that do not have barriers.
They should all be removed and replaced with single central bollards to prevent car access.

The barriers are too narrow to fit cargo bikes through
A new set of barriers has appeared on the hospital side of the usway bridge at Addenbrookes.
Creates the usual set of problems for cargo bikes and less confident bike users, with the added bonus of being on a steep hill that ices up regularly, and right next to a busway with a record of squishing people who fall onto it.
Concern at September Community Council about need for barrier to discourage young people from running into the road on way to Music Hall.

This appears to be a busy crossing, and is used by parents and children heading to and from the school, both by cycle and on foot.
The chicane barriers make it difficult to cross here with a standard bicycle, let alone a cargo bike or trailer. The cross-hatched area is much more practical to use than the island, but leaves users exposed on a fast road, especially considering that primary-school children are likely to be using this facility.
On the western side, there is nowhere to wait to cross, so riders with large cycles an trailers have to block the path for other users whilst they wait to cross.
This is outside the area of the Cherry Hinton North development, but both motor and cycle traffic through here is likely to increase when that is completed, so it is somewhat related.

The Councils are proposing that King's Parade have some kind of anti-terrorism blockage, presumably to prevent a car being driven at speed into a large number of pedestrians.
Clearly it is important that cycle access is not impeded unduly.
Make the crossing from the Brooms Road path onto the signed cycle route up Barrie Avenue a toucan crossing, and remove the guard rails so that bikes can use that short stretch of pavement to reach Barrie Avenue

Another signed cut-through for cyclists, another barrier that is ableist, discriminatory and a massive hassle even for able-bodied cyclists on conventional, diamond-frame, relatively light bikes. If you don't tick both those boxes then your options are:
1. Lift your bike over the barrier. Here's hoping you're not on a cargo bike, trike or heavy city bike!
2. Reverse back along the path if you're coming from the north/Malton Way and try to find a different route that isn't blighted by barriers.
3. Take the road. Don't like cycling alongside motorised traffic? Tough!
And here's what the Council needs to do - follow the example of more enlightened cities (pretty much any city in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Germany etc etc etc) and remove the barriers!!

Last year a new path was built by Sustrans linking an existing bridleway to Rufforth. Great, right? Sure, *unless you dare to cycle on a non-conventional bike and/or have a physical disability*! Because what's this we have here? It's a barrier that makes it impossible for people with a physical disability and/or on a non-conventional bike to get past! Sustrans claim that the Council is responsible for this barrier, and the Council have said that those responsible "have been informed". Will action be taken? Will the 15-20% of York residents who have a physical disability be able to use this new path funded with their taxpayers' money? We shall see.

This cut-through is on a key, signed, cycle route from Clifton Moor Gate, supposedly allowing cyclists to avoid the busy routes. But cyclists seeking to make use of this cut-through have to contend with not one, but two barriers, both apparently installed to impede cycle traffic or at the very least force to cyclists to walk (because all cyclists can walk without problem, right?!). The older barrier is a fence-type one which greatly narrows the space available to pass through. Apparently that wasn't enough to stop those pesky cyclists, as a concrete bollard has been installed maybe 0.5 metres from the metal barrier, in front of the greatly narrowed space. In short, only able-bodied cyclists with conventional bikes have any hope of getting through, and even then, it's a struggle. These barriers need to be removed.
Barriers across the cycle track that are impassable and dangerous.
I took my daughter for a cycle ride from York down the Solar System and while we were crossing the race course we attempted to ride through the barriers, my daughter failed to get around and in falling off awkwardly under the barrier hit the back of her head under the helmet on the metal bar. Race goes helped us but the race marshall ignored us.
I understand there are some problems with this section of the route but if route should either be passable or shut, its dangerous in its current format. Could someone post up what the situation is so I can contact the council and Sustrans.

There is a foot bridge in Moore Avenue, which is very difficult for cycles and push chairs to negotiate, it is heavily used every day especially since the new Joseph Rowntree houses have been built. I have already contacted York Council to see if it would be possible to have the chicane access removed they have told me they cannot do this because they don't know who owns the bridge.

It is impossible to travel on a cycle from Clifford's Tower to the other side of Skeldergate Bridge, without going around the entire Fishergate Gyratory - a really unpleasant and unnecessarily long experience. The alternative is to push your cycle over the bridge using narrow pavements and being hemmed in by barriers: impossible for people with limited mobility, or non-standard cycles.
"Cycle Path" between houses has a barrier across it reducing usability for trailers, trikes etc.
The Lovers Loan shared path through the Grange has at least 5 very tight barriers along its length, and missing dropped kerbs - especially at the crossing of Dick Place. Removing barriers or widening them would make it much more easy to use for bikes, buggies and wheelchairs. Even some double pushchairs don't fit!
Pointless and obstructive barriers on footpath near The Murrays Brae. Impossible to traverse with a trailer, tandem or tagalong.
Needlessly narrow gaps between barriers at entrance to Burdiehouse Path from Guardwell Glen

The gate at the north end of the Innocent tunnel only leaves a narrow opening.
1. It's generally too narrow for trailers etc.
2. You move from bright light outside into the darkness of the tunnel, and going into the tunnel you often can't see people cycling or walking out; this would not be an issue of the full width of the path was usable.
3. The gap is at the edge of the path with various surface defects
Barriers/chicanes on footpath which make it difficult for people with mobility issues to use these paths. They are also tricky for children on bikes to navigate, or if you are pushing a bike.

Since the horrific attacks that took place on Westminster Bridge, and most recently London Bridge, the Metropolitan Police have installed temporary barriers on many central London bridges.
LCC is fully supportive of the need to take urgent steps to provide extra protection for Londoners and visitors to our city. But we also believe it's right that we look at these measures, that have had to go in very rapidly, to see both what lessons need to be learned for future Highways schemes in the capital, and to see what, if any, tweaks can be undertaken to ensure these barriers can provide the extra security needed as well as allow people, especially London's large number of cycling commuters, to continue to cycle safely with minimal disruption - ideally even with enhanced safety and/or provision.
Now we want your ideas of any tweaks, modifications or other measures that can be brought forward on the bridges affected so far, and given the measures in so far, to provide vital measures to protect against terrorist attacks, but also to enhance safety and provision for those walking and cycling, and to mitigate the negative effects of the measures so far.
