  • Possible location for a cycle bridge as part of the HS2 / SS2 North- South cycle route

Created by BrianInBeeston // 0 threads

The DfT have contracted consultants to come up with a concept for a north south cycle route broadly following the alignment of the HS2 railway line, but linking up key points of interest and centres of population along the way. For the section from East Midlands Airport to the new station at Toton, a key issue is where the cycle route should cross the Trent. There is a compromise to be made between the shortest route from EMA-Toton and locating the bridge where it would serve the largest population. A more Eastern bridge would serve large population centres in Beeston & Clifton, whereas a more western bridge would be a more direct route. A possible compromise would be to locate the bridge near the existing rail bridges at Trent Junction near Trent Lock.

  • Tyne - No good crossing available

    Created by esde84 // 0 threads

Despite the number of bridges that link Newcastle and Gateshead, there is not a single route across the Tyne that throws bike users in to conflict with either high volumes of motor vehicles at high speeds or that uses shared paths that create potential conflict with pedestrians.

Due to the amount of people who already cycle between Newcastle and Gateshead and the potential for this to grow, there should be at least one high level crossing that gives bike users there own space when crossing the Tyne.

  • Bridge between Abergavenny and Llanfoist: the 'missing link'

Created by Jack Thurston // 1 thread

Cycle Route 46 from crosses the old stone bridge across the River Usk between Abergavenny and Llanfoist. There are good, safe and direct cycle paths on either side of the bridge, but the bridge itself is very hostile for cycling, and walking. It is on the A4143 and there is heavy often fast traffic most times of the day. The footway is very narrow and only on one side of the bridge. Although short, this is a difficult section to negotiate, especially for inexperienced or young cyclists.

  • Belmont Viaduct

Created by Gregory // 1 thread

I know this has been proposed before, but I wanted to add an issue to Cyclescapes in the hope that it might come up again. We can collect reports and evidence here.

Reopening the Belmont Viaduct to cyclists and pedestrians could greatly shorten and improve a lot of journeys into and across Durham.
Previously Durham Council (before the County Council?) were awarded lottery funding for this. I think the issue was with landowners, and so the funding got diverted to projects outside of the city.

  • Carter Cycle Bridge Western Access Improvements

Created by Edward Leigh // 2 threads

Hidden away in the planning application for the Skanska development around the new Northern Access Road to Cambridge station are detailed proposals for the redesigned cycle access to the western end of Carter Bridge:

[Scroll down to 'CARTER CYCLE BRIDGE WESTERN ACCESS IMPROVEMENTS'.]

My concern is that the new junction with the bridge on-ramp will be difficult and dangerous to negotiate for cyclists and pedestrians. With 450 cycle movements towards the city at peak time, this will be a busy junction where cyclists are moving rapidly as they descend the slope. Those cyclists heading for the station will have to break hard before turning across the path of oncoming cyclists and across the footway in order to join the new link path.

This is undoubtedly an improvement on the existing arrangement (which involves crossing Devonshire Road twice to access the station), but two options that seem to have been considered in the past but rejected would be safer and more convenient:

    1) Opening a route via Ravensworth Gardens through the existing wall at the boundary of the station car park.

    2) Adding a cycle-only ramp joining the south side of the bridge opposite the stairway.

    Any thoughts?

  • Prince St Bridge - Quick Fix

Created by Eric Booth // 2 threads

Prince St bridge is an anarchic pigs ear. I like pigs and fond of a bit of anarchy but it's getting beyond a joke. Of course it will all be sorted out properly in due course but we could live with this for years. Here's a quick fix:

    SOUTH
    1. Move south vehicle stop line back 10m behind tramlines
    2. Remove all bollards unless one or two kept in line with centre of bridge with arrows right for cars
    3. Widen cycle lane from bridge to Festival way turn so suitable for 2-way cycling.
    4. Put in Give Way painted line at an angle running from enlarged cycle lane to centre line so southbound cyclists alerted to need to filter across traffic.

    NORTH
    1. Remove all bollards
    2. Widen cycle lane for 2 way cycling all the way up to the traffic lights with The Grove.
    3. Remove 5 bollards on each side of north bound traffic light along with the two set back
    4. Paint cycle lane passing behind light and then back onto carriageway making it nice and clear that it's an option for cyclists when lights red or they can carry on (as most will, no worse than now but at least it will be clear that they can treat these as 'give way')
    5. There will need to be 'give way' paint to make clear that pedestrians have right of way on the by-pass.

Yes it's muddled but less so than now and makes the desire lines easier. It's also a cheap paint based fix pending the proper job.

  • Inadequate Cycle Channels On Vauxhall Foot Bridge

Created by Sam Saunders // 1 thread

Vauxhall Bridge between Coronation Road and Cumberland Road has a channel provided for wheeling bicycles on one side of its stepped sections. The channel is so narrow and so close to the railings that a bike can only be wheeled along it at a severe tilt. In addition only one side has a channel so wheeling the bike in the opposite direction has to be done from the wrong side of the bike, making it even more awkward.

  • Impermeable junction

Created by James Avery // 1 thread

Cyclists prohibited in either direction continuing on Barras Lane. Classic case of high profile £2m bridge nearby (Hill St), but no follow on for nearby streets.

  • Sharp, uneven bend at bottom of Madley Brook cycle path

    Created by jp.stacey // 1 thread

At the lower end of the cycle path that runs from Church Lane, up Madley Brook to Madley Park, is a bridge set at a weirdly sharp angle to everything else.

Coming from Church Lane, it is immediately after a blind corner, requiring a sharp right turn; then the bridge requires a sharp left turn. At this very point, before the wood of the bridge, the road surface is uneven and has collapsed.

While the cycle path apparently has to briefly join the footpath - no permission given for a way through on the south side of Madley Brook? - it does so in a very dangerous way, which is difficult even for experienced cyclists to negotiate, and provides no visibility of other route users including pedestrians.

  • Green Dragon Bridge

Created by Jim Chisholm // 2 threads

Currently there are 'No cycling' notices despite this being a major cycle route.
Although it is unlikely that major works can be done to the bridge, changes on the approaches could reduce the conflicts, by improving 'intervisibility' between the different users.

A meeting between various parties (Councillors, County bridge engineer, cycling officers, and cycling campaign is proposed.
