  • Durham Road - hazardous access to Aykley Head roundabout for cyclists

    Cyclists can face different problems when entering the roundabout.
    1) Cars do not leave enough room on the left for cyclists to enter the roundabout in parallel with motorised traffic. This forces cyclists to merge with all other vehicles and most of the times this results in a loss of momentum because the traffic queue waiting to enter the roundabout.
    2) As a result of the previous issue, when entering the roundabout uphill from standstill, cyclists are very slow and vulnerable to be hit by the cars that enter the roundabout downhill from the B6532 and leave the roundabout towards Aykley Heads. At peak times not many of these cars indicate that they are leaving the roundabout nor they use the outer lane when exiting the roundabout.

  • Absence of safe right turn into Turl St

    One popular route across the city centre from northwest to southeast avoiding Cornmarket Street involves a right turn into Turl Street from Broad Street. This manoeuvre can conflict with traffic exiting Turl Street and turning right.

    As it would be highly impractical to force cyclists to strictly adhere to the one-way system that extends east of this junction and then turn left into Turl Street from the opposite direction, a kerb-protected space or form of mini roundabout should be installed here to make this manoeuvre safe and legal for cyclists.

  • New bus stop(s) on Addenbrookes site

    A new bus stop has been created on Francis Crick Avenue just south of the junction with the busway on the east side. The problem is that there's a mandatory cycle lane there. Currently buses park in the cycle lane. It's also only 10m from the toucan crossing.

    According to http://www.thebusway.info/pdfs/maps/trumpington.pdf there might also be another stop outside the MRC on the west side, also with a mandatory cycle lane.

  • No Parking Restrictions (QR20)

    Lack of parking restrictions at this bend/entrance to Lochend Park leads to conflict with oncoming vehicles and "squeezing" unsuitable for a route designed to encourage 8-80 cycling.

    Parked cars often block the (poorly placed) dropped kerb into Lochend Park.

  • Outside Barmy Arms

    The road outside the Barmy Arms pub, Twickenham Embankment, used to be closed to motor traffic by a single line of posts with cycle logos painted on the road between two of these, clearly showing there is a cycle route there.
    Recently this has been replaced with two lines of posts about 3m apart and there are no cycle route markers. This is leading pedestrians to reasonably assume that the area between the posts is for pedestrians only and to stand there in groups with drinks from the pub, creating conflicts with cyclists trying to ride through the area. The existence of the cycle route should once again be indicated by signs or painted cycle symbols.

  • Twickenham Embankment 2-way

    The Embankment, Twickenham is a two-way street. Many driver sseem to think it is one-way Westbound. Even the Cyclescape map wrongly marks it as one-way! It needs signage clarifying it is two-way, to avoid motorists being obstructive or abusive to cyclists lawfully riding Eastward along it.

    Bell Lane is two-way. Most drivers using it go Northward and many seem to think it is one-way that way. It needs signage clarifying it is two-way, to avoid motorists being obstructive or abusive to cyclists lawfully riding South along it.

  • Cricket Ln 2-way

    Cricket Lane is a dead end and therefore two-way. Since an exit from a car park was built leading into it, many drivers seem to think it is a one-way street from the car park. In fact it is used by cyclists going in both directions between High St and Bushy Park.
    It needs signs clarifying that it is two-way, as drivers are being obstructive or abusive to cyclists legitimately using it.
