  • Unsafe environment on Norfolk Street near St. Matthew's School

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 1 thread

Norfolk Street is narrowed considerably by the car parking on both sides.

At school dropping-off and collection time, there is absolute chaos, with all kinds of dodgy reversing manoeuvres with little children around. This is a shame, as there is really fantastic new cycle parking at the school. Also, the pay-and-display parking effectively makes this important contraflow route less safe than it should be.

The car parking by CB2 should be removed also. This is particularly hazardous.

  • East Dulwich parking zone and healthier streets

    Anon // 1 thread

Southwark Council is conducting a parking and healthier streets study in the East Dulwich area, shown in pink (on cyclescape pic).

We have received many requests for permit parking from residents in East Dulwich since 2015 and we expect parking pressure to increase with the adjacent Dog Kennel Hill parking zone recently implemented and should the 'Peckham West' zone to the North be implemented (also in consultation). We are therefore carrying out a study on the potential introduction of a parking zone in East Dulwich, to improve parking for residents and support businesses while creating more healthy streets for people from all walks of life.

We expect for the zone to result in freeing up roughly 40% of the kerbside space and are therefore proposing ‘healthy streets’ proposals to encourage walking and cycling for people from all walks of life: ‘parklets’ (planting and communal seating in the place of a parking space), seating along walking routes for places to stop and rest, and cycle parking with reserved spaces for cargo bikes and disability adapted cycles. The Southwark Spine cycle route soon to be implemented along Crystal Palace Road is expected to further encourage cycling in the area.

To improve bus journey times we are proposing to amend the bus lane operation to include an afternoon/evening peak operating time in the existing bus lane north of Blackwater Road, and to remove parking at the junction with Ashbourne Grove which is a pinchpoint for buses.

We aim to support the high street by encouraging walking and cycling: research has shown that improving the environment for walking and cycling has positive effects on the high street economy: https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publications-and-reports/economic-benefits-of-walking-and-cycling  with people walking, cycling and using public transport spending spending 40% more each month than car drivers . In addition, to enable more flexibility and higher turnover, we are proposing to extend the operating time of half hour bays so that after the initial free half hour visitors could extend their stay for a fee. Visitors will also be able to use shared used bays in surrounding side streets.

    Why We Are Consulting

A parking and healthier streets study is an opportunity for the council to assess the parking issues in a certain area by asking the local residents and businesses how they view parking on their street and whether they would like a parking zone and street improvements to be introduced.

The council will analyse all responses on a road by road basis and make a recommendation to the decision maker.

Any parking controls or street improvements that we introduce will take into account the results of the consultation as well as existing highway safety issues in the proposed zone, feedback from emergency services, and our wider transport policies reflecting our responsibilities to air quality and active travel.

We would like to hear your views on the proposals. Please read the background documents below and consider the proposed layout and preliminary healthy street imrpovements before completing the questionnaire online or by post via the freepost address, by 31 January 2019.

  • Sutton's Parking Consultation Stage 1

Created by Marcus Howarth // 1 thread

From the council page (Note says this is South of Sutton, map not that clear so don't trust the area used here on cyclescape)

With the fourth highest car ownership levels in London, and residents telling us that parking is a major and growing concern, our Parking Strategy aims to improve local parking and traffic situations across the borough.

Our parking consultation will be rolled out in three phases, with each phase covering different locations across the borough. This Stage 1 Parking Consultation kicks off the second phase, where we'll be consulting with some residents in the Sutton South, Cheam & Belmont and Carshalton & Clockhouse Local Committee areas, as shown in the map below.

Responses to this Parking Survey will help us understand about parking on your street. Whether you have parking problems or not, we’d like to hear from you as all feedback will be fed into parking and traffic management proposals being made for your street.

  • Station Road West multi-storey car park

Created by Gregory Williams // 1 thread

Canterbury City Council have proposed a multi-storey car park on the site of their existing car park in Station Road West. Only minimal cycle parking spaces are proposed (just 16 spaces). The spaces are not covered and are too closely spaced. The car parking increase is substantial (248 extra spaces). The extra traffic will make the area less cycleable and increase the air pollution.

  • Contraflow bike lane should have double yellows

Created by FrenchyF // 1 thread

Parking/loading should not be allowed in the contraflow bike lane. Drivers are often unaware that there even is a contraflow bike lane, and parked cars force cyclists to enter the oncoming lane, which causes conflict and endangers them. Ideally the bike lane would also be mandatory rather than advisory.

  • Coleridge Road

Created by Heather Coleman // 1 thread

Perhaps this will be less of an issue when the Chisholm Trail is built? But I'm sure there are plenty of cycle users of this road for whom the Chisholm Trail will not be an appropriate alternative route, mostly people going shorter distances than I'm going or needing to do short stretches of it and not heading for Addenbrooke's.

Owing to various pathworks on Stourbridge and Midsummer Commons, I've been taking a different route from Milton to Addenbrooke's, going through Romsey and down Coleridge Road the last couple of weeks. It's horrible. Parked cars in random places make it fairly unpleasant as you have to weave in and out with cars which aren't exactly adhering to the 20mph speed limit going past you.

I know this is a pipe dream, but wouldn't it be nice if Coleridge Road was given the Gilbert Road treatment.

  • Parking on the towpath entrance

Created by Anna Langley // 1 thread

A dropped kerb was created here to make it easier for cyclists (in particular) to get onto and off the towpath. Since then, and even more so since the demolition of the Penny Ferry pub, cars and vans have been using the space as a car park. Vehicles are parked there daily, and I have been photographing them as I go past. I have included a link so you can see what I mean.

I've contacted my county and city councillors, and the council itself. And the response has been silence.

    Suggestions please...

  • Rope Walk cars park in cycle lane westbound

Created by Kevin Ablitt // 1 thread

It is a constant problem that car drivers think it is acceptable to park in this particular spot.
The single yellow needs upgrading to double yellow lines ( is this enforced anyway ) OR we need hard infrastruture design which prevents such selfish behaviour.

  • Parking in Inch Park

Created by Stephan Matthiesen // 1 thread

Often a lot of parking on the grass, in laybys etc., especially during sports event, but also other days.

There is a small parking area in front of the Sports Centre, mainly disabled bays, and a large car park in front of Inch House.

The council has over time added more and more grasscrete areas on the eastern part of the road for about 12 cars, I've been told they were not in the original planning permission.

The provision of parking attracted more and more drivers into the park as there is now an expectation that one can park close to the sports centre, this has become the norm rather than the exception (for people with disabilities, deliveries etc).

    Needed are
    - bollards along the road to protect the grass
    - clear signage
    - reduce the parking spaces within the park to the minimum to discourage drivers.

  • Pavement frequently blocked by parked cars in Llanfoist

Created by Fraser Stephens // 0 threads

    RAISED AT PUBLIC MEETING 10-04-2014

One mainly for the pedestrians and anyone pushing a pushchair, but also impacts toddlers and young children riding on the pavement: On the corner of The Cutting and Merthyr Road, any car longer than a small hatchback blocks the narrow strip of pavement assigned to pavement users.

This is a key route for people coming from Abergavenny to access Llanfoist and route 46.

  • Priority to cyclists at car park exit

Created by Matthew Phillips // 0 threads

The exit from this retail park car park has two lanes. There are no road markings warning drivers to expect cyclists on the shared-use pavement which is part of NCN 14 & 70. This section of pavement was recently rebuilt. Why could we not have a raised table at the exit, giving priority to cyclists and pedestrians here? Why does the through-route for cyclists have to give way to the car park exit? While the shared use pavement is welcome, the lack of priority is what tends to lead to experienced cyclists taking to the road instead, as it can actually be safer as well as quicker. If cycling infrastructure is more dangerous or slower than the road alternative, it is not worth installing.

  • Cyclists dismount for Tesco car park traffic

Created by Matthew Phillips // 0 threads

By the Tesco superstore off Dragon Lane, the road junction was recently rebuilt. On the west side of Dragon Lane is a shared-use pavement which forms part of NCN 14/70. While cars travelling north on Dragon Lane can go straight across on a single phase, cyclists are expected to dismount, and cross with pedestrians at a two-stage crossing. The object is to maximise the flow in and out of the Tesco superstore car park, which is the only purpose of this junction. Designing the junction to give greater priority and convenience to cyclists and pedestrians would help shift the balance back to sustainable living.

  • Parking on uphill side of Potters Bank

Created by Matthew Phillips // 1 thread

The bottom stretch of Potters Bank is quite steep, and therefore cyclists tend to be going quite slowly up this section of road. In this situation it is nice to have plenty of space so that you can pedal at your own pace without feeling hassled by traffic trying to overtake. Unfortunately on this section of road, there are several car parking spaces on the up-hill side of the road. When they are occupied, passing them on a bike is a slow and uncomfortable business. It would be far better for cyclists if these spaces could be removed and an up-hill cycle lane provided.

The parking spaces are not adjacent to any properties so there is no particular need for people to park there rather than in neighbouring streets: they are probably mainly used when the spaces in Quarryheads Lane are full.
