    How can we tell whether a bicycling environment is good or bad? How many times have you been cycling along a piece of existing infrastructure only to find the word 'end' written on the pavement and yourself forced back onto the road into traffic? 

    With this in mind, I am undertaking a piece of research as part of my masters dissertation at Queens College, University of Cambridge. I am  gathering primary data of existing users of the current cycling network across Cambridge. From this data I will be able to assess the coherence and directness of the existing cycle network and identify potential 'bottlenecks' and issues from the point of view of the users.

  • Advisory cycle lanes on Gonville Place

    Gonville Place at the Mill Road end needs queue-busting cycle lanes, as per East Road.

    As the image shows, there is plenty of space here.

    The Hills Road end goes to three lanes so that would be more difficult. The Mill Road end is much easier and can be regarded as a simple 'quick win'.

  • Vehicles blocking Hills Road cycle track; what's the law?

    tl;dr What does the law or highway code have to say about vehicles (specifically, delivery vehicles) stopping in and blocking a cycle track?

    There was a DPD van blocking the hills road cycle track last week and I wrote to DPD informing them of this. They said they were going to make sure it didn't happen again and that the drivers would be informed of the rules. Today, the exact same van and driver were in the cycle track again.

    So, before I go back to DPD, and for my own knowledge to use as suitable ammunition in a "discussion", what _are_ the rules around vehicles entering, stopping and parking on a cycle lane and/or track like those on Hills Road, as well as others?

    There seems to be a number of cars parking half in the cycle lane on the new Addenbrooke's road (Dame Mary Archer Way)

    Is parking in a cycle lane an offence of some sort, and would it make a difference on what I think is a private road? (I think that those roads around Addenbrooke's are not normal in terms of ownership)

  • Cycle lane Gilmerton Rd

    Cycle lanes in both directions needs urgent improvment. It's painted on but
    - it is far too narrow, encouraging dangerous overtaking
    - road surface in the gutter (=cycle lane) extremely bad, with deep&wide cracks, most covers have sunken etc.
    - paint has faded
    - parking (near the schools)

    Many sections of Gilmerton Rd have hatching in the centre, wasting space; these sections would be wide enough for a segregated path (or wide lane protected by bollards/armadillos).

    In the narrower sections, the existing bike lane should be removed completely because at the moment it increases the dangers (encouraging cyclists to be in the gutter between kerb and speeding cars).

  • Bike lane protection

    Cars and buses southbound often cut the corner at the traffic lights (road bends to left), driving over the cycle lane.

    The cycle lane leads up to the lights but ends there and restarts some distance along the road.

    It is dangerous because drivers think that cyclists are out of the way in their own lane, even larger vehicles overtake here without realising that they easily move into the bike lane. Attached a photo where that happened to me, on 21 October 2014, the bus overtook and cut me off, I had to slam the brakes in order not to be squashed.

    The bike lane should be clearly separated here, bypassing the traffic lights completely.

  • Segregate/Protect cycle lane

    Drivers often cut the corner at the Bank of Scotland, driving over the cycle lane. The current layout encourages drivers to overtake without giving people on bicycles the necessary distance. Parking is also a dangerous problem here.

    It would be easy to install plastic highway bollards here along the cycle lane which would encourage drivers not to encroach on the cycle lane.

    Kirk Brae really needs a cycle lane uphills. There is enough space as the car lanes are fairly wide (sometimes with space wasted by hatching in the centre) but at the moment encourage dangerous overtaking.

  • Segregate the feeder lane

    The feeder lane between the bus stop and the ASL in Liberton Rd northbound should be segregated. Road and pavement are very wide here, so it would be easy to add a cycle lane segregated by a kerb to replace the curernt painted feeder lane.

    The painted feeder lane is extremely dangerous as the road bends left, so that buses, HGVs and other vehicles regularly encroach on it. Just today I saw another cyclist almost pushed onto the kerb when a bus started to move.

  • Extend bike lane to / through junction

    The bike lane (end of the "quality" bike corridor) on Mayfield Rd southbound ends about a hundred metres before the junction with Liberton Rd. It should extend up to the junction, and ideally continue through to Kirk Brae and Liberton Road.

    Extending the bike lane would allow cyclists to pass the queuing cars and get to the traffic lights. At the moment, cyclists are stuck at the bottom of the steep hill at the end of the cycle lane, and then can cycle up only very slowly, with lot of angry car driver behind them. It often takes two green phases to get from the end of the cycle lane to the actual lights, unless you overtake on the right against oncoming traffic speeding around the corner from Liberton Rd.

    This is a key junction as there are no other routes between KB and Liberton/Gilmerton (except going around to Cameron Toll which is not much better).

    Consultation by Salford Council/Urban Vision on CCAG funded scheme. "This will provide a new cycle lane along the length of Great Clowes Street and Blackfriars Road, which will link the residential area of Broughton to Manchester city centre. Where possible the route will be segregated from traffic"

  • Cycle lane infringement on Pembroke Street and Downing Street

    Because of queuing for the Grand Arcade car park, amongst other things, the mandatory cycle lane on Pembroke Street and Downing Street is routinely abused by motor vehicles – one every 66 seconds on a Saturday afternoon

    The corner at Free School Lane is a particular concern because vehicles traveling east can't see oncoming cycles.

  • Infringement of East Road cycle lane

    The new flats at the fire station seem to be attracting delivery vehicles to unload in the cycle lane at the west end of East Road. The wide lane here is separated from the road by cross hatching. Should we ask for physical segregation on this short length, e.g armadillos. Would delivery vehicles still bump over them to park are make matters worse to get round them? Would a barrier be effective?

    Very narrow cycle lane between University Road and Violet Road and Broadlands Road. Encourages very close passes when cycling in the lane (with 10cm of your handlebars), or aggressive impatient driving if you cycle outside of the lane. Additionally to cycle within this cycle lane it is necessary to cycle closer to the kerb than the recommended 50cm from kerb (
    Lane markings are extremely faded. Lane contains several drains.

    No cycle lane would be better than the current cycle lane.

  • Whiteladies tree removal

    A tree on the side of East side of Whiteladies road (next to HSBC) has a notice stating that the tree will be removed and replanted. The tree is on the very wide pavement right next to the road, and the road is not wide enough for vehicles and cyclists: a pinch point.

    There is clearly enough space on Whiteladies road for a segregated cycle lane. It is a popular route used often by heavy traffic. With enough shifting of road lanes there's even enough room for an uphill cycle lane.

    Replanting the tree away from the road would remove one small obstacle and show evidence that BCC is looking towards improving cycling in the long run.

  • Sheen Road - more pavement cycling

    This dad with kids in a trailer clearly doesn't feel safe enough to use the bike lane so he cycles on the pavement. Probably because he's on the way to one of the 7 schools or nurseries near to this route; and the cars are doing 40mph on that nice wide road. This is a regular sight on this route.
