  • Cycle priority over 202025 access

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

On 202025 there will be a shared use path behind the hedge along Berechurch Hall Road but the remaining vehicle access will present a barrier to anyone who wishes to use the toucan crossing.

There should be cycle/pedestrian priority (Fig 10.13 eg1 eg2) over the remaining vehicle access.

  • Cycle crossing signal timings

Created by Matthew // 1 thread

Issue derived from June 2017 monthly meeting: this issue tracks information related to the timing of traffic signals that control cycle crossings (e.g. Maids Causeway / Fair St, East Road / Norfolk St, Queens Rd / Burrell's Walk, Gonville Place / Gresham Rd, all along Guided Busway, appearing on various countryside routes, etc).

We would like to gather the following information:

    a) how are the signals programmed currently (and when they change, what have they been changed to?)
    b) who is responsible for the programming of the cycle as well as the placement of cycle detectors (if any)?
    c) when needed, what levers can be pushed to get signals changed to give more priority to people walking and cycling?

  • No priority at junctions

Created by Mat Scull // 1 thread

Lovely new cycle track which has to stop at all and every junction. Tower St and Marlborough St should both be passed by the cycle track without stopping.

  • Bournville Lane - Hay Green Lane Junction

Created by Dawes Jaguar // 0 threads

There are regular collisions at this junction because motorists speed on Bournville Lane and the site-lines are very, very poor. The simple solution is to change the priority. This would solve the problem for motorists, and make it easier for cyclists to use Hay Green Lane as part of a cycle route.
I have suggested the change of priority to BCC but was given a list of excuses why this cannot possibly be done. One of these was that Bournville Lane is a blue route. I see no benefit in an emergency journey ending here because someone pulling out of Hay Green Lane couldn't see the approaching police car.

  • Traffic lights at junction do not change for bikes

Created by edge // 1 thread

When approaching this junction from the East on Widney Lane (and possibly other directions as well), the traffic lights do not detect the presence of waiting cycles.

Since the default priority at this junction is for traffic on the Blossomfield Rd / Marshall Lake Road axis, this means that cycles heading from Widney Lane to Longmore Road have to wait indefinitely to cross the junction.

In busy times this is not a problem, because a waiting car will trigger the traffic lights to change.

However, at quiet times this effectively means cycles cannot cross this junction legally at all. I have experimentally waited more than 5 minutes for the lights to change. Unless a car comes to trigger the change, cyclists are stuck.

This "bike-blindness" built into the road signalling infrastructure is unfortunately not uncommon. As well as being inconvenient for and disrespectful of cyclists, it reinforces the notion that bicycles are second-class road-users - indeed that they do not really belong on the road at all.

  • Removal of cycle facility

Created by fishter // 2 threads

At the bottom of the hill there is a "chicane" for motor vehicles to negotiate. Northbound traffic must give priority to southbound traffic.

The chicane is formed by an island on the northbound side of the road. This island has a bypass to the left to allow cyclists to proceed despite oncoming traffic.

After a recent resurfacing of the road the markings for the cycle lane were omitted (see picture). This means that cyclists should now give priority to southbound traffic as the markings indicate they should not use the bypass.

  • Priority to cyclists at car park exit

Created by Matthew Phillips // 0 threads

The exit from this retail park car park has two lanes. There are no road markings warning drivers to expect cyclists on the shared-use pavement which is part of NCN 14 & 70. This section of pavement was recently rebuilt. Why could we not have a raised table at the exit, giving priority to cyclists and pedestrians here? Why does the through-route for cyclists have to give way to the car park exit? While the shared use pavement is welcome, the lack of priority is what tends to lead to experienced cyclists taking to the road instead, as it can actually be safer as well as quicker. If cycling infrastructure is more dangerous or slower than the road alternative, it is not worth installing.

  • Priority at side entrances, A167

Created by Matthew Phillips // 0 threads

The photo shows the entrance to Durham Johnston school. Sweeping curves allow fast access to/from the main road, and the cycle path basically gives out. OK, this is probably not a busy side-road, but why on earth can we not have a level, moderately straight route for the cycle path, with priority over the vehicles turning in or out of the school? A raised table to make it clear that motor vehicles should give way. There are plenty more examples along the A167 route of side roads that could do with similar treatment.

  • Cycle track priority over A14 slip roads

Created by Shaun McDonald // 1 thread

It would be much safer to have cyclist priority on the slip roads here as is done in The Netherlands http://www.flickr.com/photos/smsm1/10046288016/ , or even the following example from Britain: http://www.cycling-embassy.org.uk/photos/good-cycling-facility-of-the-week/good-cycling-facility-of-the-week-14th-november-2013-0

The slip roads also need to be narrowed to slow motor vehicle speeds as does the turning radii of the roundabout.

  • Crazy traffic light priorities on crossing

Created by DaveE // 0 threads

The lights seem to always wait until no traffic is coming on the road before changing in favour of cyclists/pedestrians using the cycle route (NCN 20) to cross the road.

The road is very busy and this equates to extended unecessary delays. What is the point in lights that hardly ever stop cars?

This, combined with the terrible surface of the path to the south, is discouraging cyclists from using the cycle route, pushing them onto the very busy road junctions to the east and west, which have little to no cycle provisions.

Another effect is encouraging people to take risks crossing before the ligths have changed, and leaving the lights to (eventually) change when no-one needs to cross any more.

  • Cycle path with give ways

Created by fishter // 1 thread

The service entrance to the motorway services now has priority over the shared use path which runs parallel to the main road.
I have contacted both Hampshire County Council and Test Valley Borough Council about this change in priorities, but neither has responded beyond a cursory "we have received your email".
This is yet another example of through traffic being de-prioritised simply because it is on a cycle (or shared) path, rather than on a road.

  • A316 car park entrance

Created by Paul James // 0 threads

The carpark entrance cuts across the cycleway and has shallow corner radii encouraging fast entrance and exit speeds which are a danger to cyclists using the cycleway.

The cycleway should be curved away from the roadway at the junction and a marked crossing put in place a cars length from the roadway allowing space for entering and exiting cars to giveway to cyclists moving along the cycleway.

  • Park Shot junction

Created by Paul James // 0 threads

The entrance to Parkshot from the A316 cuts with a wide fast radii across the cycleway (as it becomes a narrow shared use pavement). Vehicles come at speed from the Circus and turn without seeing crossing cycles.

With access to Parkshot from Clarence Street, this entrance could easily be closed to motor traffic.

  • Lower Mortlake Road side roads

Created by Paul James // 0 threads

All the sideroads between Richmond Circus and Manor Circus are a danger to cyclists on the cycleway.

There is no warning to motorists that there will be crossing cyclists and the building angles make it hard to see if anything is coming.

Turning traffic from the A316 can have an obscured view of the cycleway due to foliage.

    Decrease corner radii.
    Make road hump more pronounced.
Make cycle surface colour continuous across roadway.
    Add markings across roadway.
    Add warning signage.
Move give way lines back to before cycleway or add additional give way lines.

  • Tesco development Grafton Way/Star Lane/Greyfriars/Stoke bridge/Nicholas Street

Created by Kevin Ablitt // 1 thread

Total re-design of this important junction.
Very complicated junction with 4 routes entering/leaving .
    Covers very large area.
Proposal is for one large oval to replace existing double roundabout.
The junction has an existing reported and unreported high level of vehicle/cyclist crash.
An ideal opportunity for Ipswich to have a radical design which protects the more vulnerable road users ?
