  • Huntingdon Road: Girton Corner area improvements needed

Created by Al Storer // 1 thread

The A14 project is bringing a cycleway into the city as far as the University farm. Previous County projects have created a decent inbound cycleway from Laurence Weaver Road and an almost OK painted lane outbound to here. There's a section of cycleway from Girton Corner to Eddington Avenue, and at Girton Corner there's a connection to The Ridgeway along Bunker's Hill. There are Cycleways intercepting Huntingdon Road at Whitehouse Lane, both into Eddington and into Darwin Green.

But oh dear. Laurence Weaver Road junction is awful. Eddington Avenue junction is awful, and there's a very narrow and much over-run cycle lane to the north of it. Girton Corner junction is poor and serves poorly those who want to go from Girton village and College to the Ridgeway.

The section of road needs a holistic approach that incorporates the route along and the routes crossing in a coherent manner.

  • Awkward right turn on to NCR76/ NCR1

Created by Pierhead // 1 thread

Travelling from North Queensferry the entrance to NCR76 / NCR1 involves a right turn while moving downhill at the very point in the road where the double white lines on the road change to dashed lines (to allow overtaking).

The double white lines prevent overtaking for several hundred yards before this (though drivers do not always comply).

Often by the time a cyclist reaches this junction from North Queensferry there following vehicles which are trying to overtake just at the very point where the cyclist must indicate right with one hand while braking with the other hand before making a right turn into a narrow bike lane at a tight angle.

This often feels dangerous, especially when several cars are trying to overtake. The "no overtaking" zone (solid double white lines in centre of road) should be extended beyond this turning point and warning signage provided for drivers. The entrance to the bike lane needs widened and the angle of entry from the road relaxed.

  • B6532 roundabout - difficult to negotiate for cyclists

    F. A. // 1 thread

Cyclists trying to cross the B6532 from either Dryburn Park or the Front Street are forced to enter the inner lane exposing them to passing cars on the outer lane at different speeds. Once they enter the roundabout there are cars coming from the B6532 at fairly high speed.
It would be much better for cyclists if there could be a painted dash bike lane that would allow cyclist enter the roundabout from the outer lane - at least they would be protected on one side from moving cars!

  • Absence of safe right turn into Turl St

Created by TMiles // 1 thread

One popular route across the city centre from northwest to southeast avoiding Cornmarket Street involves a right turn into Turl Street from Broad Street. This manoeuvre can conflict with traffic exiting Turl Street and turning right.

As it would be highly impractical to force cyclists to strictly adhere to the one-way system that extends east of this junction and then turn left into Turl Street from the opposite direction, a kerb-protected space or form of mini roundabout should be installed here to make this manoeuvre safe and legal for cyclists.

  • Strood High Street Regeneration

    Anon // 1 thread

Outline proposals for changes to Strood High Street. £9m scheme to take through traffic away from town centre.

20mph limit on High Street, various actions to prioritise pedestrian movements, re-allocation of carriageway space (lane narrowing).

Having had a brief chat to the engineers designing the scheme the 20mph limit and reduced lane widths should assist cyclists "taking the lane" in the High Street.

Commercial Road will have a cycletrack to the south of the carriageway with a crossing of Knight Road. Details are disappointingly vague at this stage.

Various ASLs and other minor works.

  • Poor lane marking eastbound at Park and Ride on Madingley Road

Created by Ben Brierton // 1 thread

The new road layout here means that eastbound cyclists travelling straight-on find themselves in the left-turn lane, stopped by a Red light, and blocking traffic turning left into the Park and Ride who have a Green left turn filter.

The road markings seem to expect cyclists in this lane to go straight ahead, even though it's the left turn lane, because it is guided into the onward eastbound cycle lane. Just feels wrong and leaves cyclists vulnerable to the left turning traffic.

There should be a 'redmac' cycle lane between the left turn lane and the right hand lane. The road markings should guide cyclists from this lane into the eastbound cycle lane instead of from the left turn lane.

  • Spital Hill - Better Buses'

Created by Dexter Johnstone // 1 thread

Road layout changes to Spital Hill. These changes were identified as potentially dangerous by Sheffield Council Cycle Audit, however, they are still going ahead.

    CycleSheffield response to changes:
Commenting on the specifics of this design, which leaves the road fundamentally unsafe for cyclists, might be seen to condone it, so we will refrain. The minor changes represent no significant improvement for cyclists (existing or potential).

In summary: Spital Hill is the natural major cycle route connecting the Burngreave and Pitsmoor to the city centre. There is no convenient alternative.

Again this is an extremely busy road, with a complex junction. During rush hour, having to compete for lane spaces with 10 ton busses and numerous taxi cabs which will be switching lanes, is unpleasant and risky, and will in itself discourage inexperienced cyclists to start cycle commuting. In addition the proposed lane layouts are confusing to both motorists and cyclists which will lead to unpredictable road behaviour which is a further grave risk to cyclists in the traffic stream.

Both the traffic volumes and complexity of the junction make it unreasonable to expect people to share them for cycling.

The width of the streets (both Savile Street and A6135/Spital Hill) have ample room for the Council to provide protected space for cycling. It is disappointing that Sheffield City Council has not taken the opportunity to utilise this space to allow people in Sheffield to cycle safely and confidently in this area.
