  • Winton Primary School Streets Consultation

Created by David Lincoln // 1 thread

Islington Council is planning to introduce a School Street Scheme and left turn ban to improve air quality around Winton Primary School and create a safer, more pleasant environment for everyone. The Council would like to hear your thoughts on the proposal.

What is proposed for Killick Street and Collier Street? The proposal is to trial a temporary road closure on Killick Street, between Southern Street and Collier Street, and Collier Street, between Killick Street and Calshot Street, between 8.30am-9.15am and 3.15pm-4.00pm during school term time. A no left turn will also operate on Southern Street during those times.

Vehicles will not be able to enter the streets between these times unless they have been given an exemption. Residents and businesses who live and work on a school street will be able to register for an exemption as well as Blue Badge holders. The scheme will not operate in the school holidays or at weekends.

Signs will inform drivers of the restrictions before the entrance to the closed street. Non-registered vehicles entering the street during the times of operation may be identified by camera and issued a penalty charge notice.

  • The Reach Free School to Mill End and Maple Cross, Hertfordshire

Created by Peter Loader // 1 thread

The Reach Free School plans to move to a permanent site in Mill End, Rickmansworth, Herts. There has been a public exhibition of the draft proposals so that the Education Funding Agency can gather feedback before it submits a planning application to Three Rivers District Council. At the exhibition, the draft cycling/walking routes linking the school to Mill End and Maple Cross seemed to be unsatisfactory and to conflict with the adopted Three Rivers Local Plan.

  • Moore St Roundabout

Created by WildNorthlands // 1 thread

Moore st was one of our first roundabouts to be cycle-ised and is showing its age. The subways are too narrow, the turns are too acute and the sightlines are poor. There are personal safety issues in the evening (although having cyclists come through on a regular basis makes it safer for pedestrians) and there is poor connectivity with the rest of the city in some directions. One desire line is from Waitrose car park which involves going up a pedestrian ramp, crossing the access road and then going down the cycle lane in the wrong direction into a blind corner. There is no clear way to get from the roundabout to the Sharrow/Heeley area, and the route onto Moore St towards Ecclesall Rd dumps you into a bus stop on the dual carriageway - as you continue towards Ecclesall Rd you have contend with a sliproad onto Summerfield St with traffic theoretically decelererating from 40 to 30 but often doing higher speeds than that. A parallel cycle route through the Wards Brewery site is hard to access and has several roads crossing it with no priority for cyclists or pedestrians.

    Long-term solution:-

Fill the thing in and put in a dutch-style roundabout with proper crossings

  • Ponderosa Cycle Link

Created by WildNorthlands // 1 thread

Creating a cycle route through the Ponderosa would shorten journeys between the University and Hillsborough and avoid a tricky junction (Upperthorpe Rd/Martin St)

  • Chatham Road, Boxley. Experimental TRO

    Anon // 2 threads

Early in February I came across some changes to the layout of the road.
There were notices up explaining that it was an experimental scheme, intended to stop lorries parking. 500 metres of the road had been made one way southbound and one lane plus the parking bays bollarded off.
The cycle route between Maidstone and the Medway Towns via Bluebell Hill used that 500 metre stretch northbound. I saw that as a problem.

Don’t worry I was told, the scheme isn’t complete yet.

Returning in March I discovered that the adjacent footway has been marked for shared use by equestrians, pedestrians and cyclists. Some blue signs have been added but the path remains cracked, potholed and broken and it is around one metre wide. It's also rapidly becoming overgrown.

There are design manuals for cycle facilities. They recommend a width of three metres for two way traffic. They also recommend that, where space is available, cycle facilities should be on the carriageway.

KCC say they considered cyclists and equestrians at the earliest stages of the design and that a minimum level of provision was made as the scheme is temporary.

I don’t know why KCC haven’t done the job right but I do know the situation may become permanent unless cyclists campaign against it.

The consultation period ends on 15 July, please take some time to object to the scheme in its present form.

  • North Newtown area: removing unnecessary traffic

    Martin Lucas-Smith // 1 thread

The Newtown area (basically between the Botanic Gardens and Lensfield Road on the inner ring road) is a mass of one-way streets, rat-running vehicles, children being dropped off to the schools rather than cycling, and so on.

We should take the opportunity to work with locals to improve the area.
