The Council is proposing to introduce a traffic management scheme in Plough Lane junction with Collyer Avenue and Queenswood Avenue. We are proposing these measures in response to concerns raised by local residents in the area, ward councillors about traffic speed, noise, pollution, cut through traffic and road safety at the above mentioned junctions.
What is proposed?
The following measures are proposed:
What is the aim of the measures?
These measures aim to
From the 2023/24 and indicative 2024/25 programmes: (A) / Environment and Sustainable Transport Committee
Appendix 7 b) - this is getting (£ ,000's )
Perceived safety issues raised that vehicles are not stopping at the
existing zebra because vehicles are rat running to avoid Croydon
Road/A232 (red route). The zebra is located on a link between the two
roads being used for rat running so drivers are looking for the next road
entrance rather than at the zebra. The proposal is considering measures
to address through traffic issues - initial locations being investigated are
the junctions of Queenswood Avenue/Plough Lane and Collyer
Ave/Plough Lane (subject to consultation).
The proposal also includes consideration of a parallel low traffic cycle
route along Queenswood & Collyers Road as an alternative to the A232
Croydon Road which currently has no cycle facilities along the parallel
stretch. Cyclists using this quiet alternative link will be able to re-join the
A232 Croydon Road via Aldwick Rd which connects to the existing
Croydon Rd cycle facility. This element of the scheme could be moved to
the Cycle Network Development/Borough Cycling Fund.

Grange Road has extremely narrow cycle lanes for most of its length, which include traffic calming bollards forcing traffic down to a single lane. While this design does slow traffic, the narrow space for the cycle lane means that trikes have to slow almost to a stop to pass safely -- or in some cases may not fit at all. This forces trikes out into the single centre lane, where cars may not properly give way, and also are the sites of speed bumps and significant potholes. If the lanes were about 20-30cm wider, then trikes could pass without a problem. This issue affects all of the bollards on both sides of Grange Road for its full length, but I’ve highlighted a particularly problematic one since I had to pick a spot.
(In general, the cycle lanes on Grange Road are too narrow for cargo trikes forcing them out into traffic lanes anyway, but it’s the brick bases to the bollards that cause a particular problem.)

On the northeast side of the Trumpington Road and Brooklands Ave junction, there’s a combined cycle and foot path around the corner that suffers two problems that make trike use problematic in peak times:

Bollards close Storeys Way to through traffic while allowing cycles through. However, the bollard spacing makes it difficult to get cargo trikes through -- e.g., Nohila and Winther products.
Where the new wands on East road begin if heading from the Newmarket road underpass into East road is a layby outside Mackays. The placement of the wands initially mean there is insufficient room to cycle on the road, but the layby is potholed, making it difficult to ride through. After the layby the spacing is wider and they are much better.
Created by PHG // 1 thread
The new wands on East road force cyclists on to the pavement, rather than the roundabout, where East road meets Newmarket roundabout. Why should cyclists be blocked from using Newmarket roundabout, which is the easiest way to access the bus lane on Elizabeth Way bridge.
Pulling out of the wands early is dangerous and annoying. more annoying is when you forget and have to stop, or go onto the pavement and round to use the ramp.

Like many other cyclists the majority being school pupils I have used the road between Perne Road and Tiverton Way as a way to avoid the traffic on Birdwood Road , however recently the work has begun to convert the bungalow and often with builders vehicles blocking the cycle path on Perne Road . Today I encountered a group of people gathered ( deep in discussion ) in the road adjacent to the empty site which lies closer to Tiverton Way and on hearing my cycle bell seemed reluctant to move . I am concerned that this could be a site for future conflict .

Rather than directly replacing the bollard slalom that existed beforehand, the bollard specialists might have suggestions on what the layout should be here which camcycle can suggest as for the replacement...

We've received a note from a concerned resident:
Not too sure if this has been informed of this but the Sawston to Babraham CyclePath is planned to be closed by a commercial property developer on 15th Sept. Don't know when it'll reopen. All cyclists will be forced to cycle on the main road that is a pretty hairy affair at the best of times. They did this already for 2 days back in August without any consultation. The cyclepath has become very popular in the last few years as many employees from the Babraham and Granta Parks use it for commuting. Also it's relatively new so can't believe that private developers are allowed to shut it basically to use it as a free convenient storage area.

Where the path splits there is a marker post that is completely invisible at night. It should be fitted with reflective material or removed.
As the bridleway crosses Milton Road, it swaps sides of the busway, so most pedestrians and cyclists want to cross diagonally. However the toucan crossing only protects people crossing Milton Road. It doesn't stop busway traffic.
This is confusing and dangerous. When the road traffic stops at red lights, and the Toucan crossing turns green, it feels very safe to cross the busway. Yet buses can come from three directions (busway west, busway east, Milton Road south) at speeds of 30 mph.
Cyclists in particular are tempted to cross diagonally from north west to south east. Last week I saw a near accident.

Rather than providing adequate cycle parking for their pupils this Sixth Form college is discouraging cycling and increasing the likelihood of cycle theft. The bikes that were previously attached to these railings are now left on the opposite side of the road where they are not so securely parked. This shortcut is technically pedestrians-only, but forms a useful link from the environs of Bath Spa station (Widcombe) to Holloway, a dead-end for motor vehicles and therefore a quiet, if steep, climb to Bear Flat, Wellsway and beyond.
Dropped kerbs, barrier/chicane removal etc. would make this route usable by parents with cycle trailers, people on cargobikes and the like.
It was slated as a piece of work to be done by Bath & NE Somerset, but there's been no news lately.

I've just sent a sharp email to the Council. It reads as below. If the council can't do joined up information on their own websites, how do they expect people to make these modal shifts in transport that they are so keen on?
"Dear Parking services,
I've just done a google search on this.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=park+st+car+park+ca
mbridge&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=eZdMT-vbLsnu8QPw7pHXAg
first item says "multi-story car park with cycle parking and pushchairs
for loan".
However, when you then go to the Park St car park page, it says nothing
about either cycle parking being available, nor about the pushchair loan
scheme. How about a link to
http://www.cambridge.gov.uk/ccm/content/transport-and-streets/cycling-and
-walking/cycle-parks.en
on the website, so we don't have to do a separate search, so that when
people go to the Park St website, they can get all of its features? They
may even then decide to cycle into town rather than drive.
I was looking for this information as I was just emailing a friend who
lives in Chesterton and has a nine month old child, who I wasn't sure
would be aware of this scheme, which she may find useful. However, if we
have to spend five minutes doing exactly the correct google searches, it
counts as a "secret facility" apart from those in the know.
I wasn't aware, for example, that you could also get pushchairs at the
Grand Arcade one. This information needs better dissemination, and
linking from within the car park and other public transport pages, so
that people can make a properly informed decision about their transport
choices when visiting the city. This, surely, is the way to get modal
shifts in people's transport choices?"

The road between Kingston and Barham is rural and has fast-moving traffic despite the majority of it having a 30 mph speed limit. There are no accompanying footpaths beside the road and the road is relatively narrow. A cycle and pedestrian link is required, particularly to allow schoolchildren from Kingston to safely reach the primary school in Barham.

Permission given for 286 homes. Concern was raised in 2010 about the positioning of the 715 cycle parking spaces.
There has been stepped access from the riverside to Victoria Bridge for years, possibly since the bridge's construction.
Victoria Bridge is currently closed pending refurbishment/reconstruction due to its dilapidated and dangerous condition; there may be S106 money available from the developers of the adjacent Western Riverside housing development. It's crucial to write to local councillors expressing the community's desire to have the bridge access not merely restored, but enhanced, for the benefit of cyclists, pedestrians and less-able users of the bridge and riverside.

Access to and return journey from the Crematorium is a real challenge for the cyclist. Indeed, chances are you may end up in it if you try to ride your bike there.
Here we have a essential public service which is accessible by car only. Is this acceptable ?
These issues arise also if a convoy of bicycles was to accompany a coffin.
