  • Dangerous hidden stakes on cycle path off Madingley road

Created by Richard Folley // 1 thread

This is a long term issue for me - at the beginning of the 1st lockdown in March I turned into this path and my bike wheel hit a small solid wooden stake hidden under plants. Although I managed to remain upright the sudden jolt caused a sharp pain in my right upper arm. Since then, despite physiotherapy, the arm muscle has not recovered & has remained painful & weak.

I guess that the stakes were placed there by a local resident aiming to protect flowers/plants. I wonder if anyone else has noticed or experienced a similar incident?

  • Colchester General Hospital

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

The General is Colchester's District Hospital and has an A&E department.  Over time it has agglomerated services from the various sites across Colchester that have closed, including those on Lexden Road and on Severalls.

The transport challenges the Hospital faces include that:

    • its main vehicle access is on a residential road
    • although it is serviced by bus routes it is not near or well integrated with transport hubs
    • local cycling provision is poor and in particular the junctions around North Station amount to a significant barrier to cyclists travelling from South Colchester

  • Reserved land adjacent to Northern Approach Road

Created by Steven Moseley // 1 thread

When Northern Approach Road was built land was set aside with a view to providing segregated bus lanes in the future.  It's not clear what current plans are, if any exist.

Provision for cyclists should also be made on what is an important route between the Town Centre and North Station, and the Hospital, Mile End, the A12 J28 Park and Ride, and Severalls Business Park.  e.g. Cambridge's Guided Busway also has a shared use path alongside.

  • Eastern Hertfordshire Area Growth and Transport Plan

Created by JonC // 2 threads

The Eastern Growth & Transport Plan (EGTP) is a new transport strategy to help direct and plan transport improvements and investment in Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth and surrounding areas.

This area faces significant levels of proposed new housing and employment development, with added pressure of new homes and jobs are also proposed in surrounding areas including Cambridgeshire, North Essex and the rest of Hertfordshire.

Important transport links in this area include the M11, A120, A1184, A414, A1250, B1383 and B1004 roads, the West Anglia Main Line railway line, the National Cycle Routes 11 and 16 and a range of local and longer distance bus and coach services.

To help ensure the transport network continues to work safely and efficiently, the GTP identifies packages of interventions, that could address current and future traffic congestion issues such as noise and poor air quality. Interventions can be small or large, and could be introduced now or in the future, depending on how complex they are and if enough funding is available.

  • Chesterton Recreation Ground - Wheeled Sports Facility

Created by Roxanne (CEO) // 1 thread

In 2017, councillors approved the use of Section 106 developer contributions for a new wheeled-sports facility on Chesterton recreation ground.

We consulted on proposals in 2019. Your responses suggested support for the proposal, and identified some opportunities for improvement. We have revised the proposals to address these.

The proposed facility is aimed at young people aged 4 to 14. It comprises a continuous circuit of turns and jumps, to appeal to a variety of wheeled-sports users including BMX and mountain bikes, skateboards and scooters, and roller skates.

It’s aimed at beginners and users of intermediate skill, with the intention that they can graduate to using other, more challenging facilities elsewhere in Cambridge.

  • Grafton Way Closure

Created by John Chamberlain // 0 threads

From the 24th October for four weeks Grafton Way will be closed between Huntley Street and Tottenham Court Road for drainage works. There is no reasonable alternative to the south until you get to Tavistock Place. Cyclists can use the bus lane in front of UCH if they are careful (note that you will have to make a two-stage right turn at Tottenham Court Road if you want to go up Hampstead Road).

  • Cycling route sign in Cherry Hinton points in wrong direction

The blue road sign which indicates the cycling route towards Addenbrookes, Trumpington and Newnham is pointing in the wrong direction. It currently points along High Street to the north, whereas the in fact both locations are to the south. So the sign is pointing in the opposite direction and needs to be turned at 180 degrees. Two other signs attached to the same pole pointing to Fulbourn and various other locations in Cambridge are positioned correctly.

  • 2-way Cycle Tracks - do cyclists use them in the contraflow direction?

Created by Bruce Lynn // 2 threads

Observations on the recently opened Cycleway 4 in South London indicate that 25% of cyclists choose NOT to use it in the contraflow direction. This is consistent with the view of many cyclists that it is better to be on the "correct" side of the road.  A short report of the counts on CW4 is at

I would be interested if anyone else has similar findings. and in general how people feel about 2-way tracks.  TfL seem to like them (use a bit less space, a little cheaper). But if they are significantly less likely to be used than two 1-way tracks, this information might get us better designs.
