  • Pinch point where Clerkenwell Road crosses Farringdon Road

    As a cyclist it's pretty horrible to cycle along Clerkenwell Road due to it being much narrower than it used to be, or could be due to the ultra wide pavements.

    West bound there is a bit of 2 lane queuing preventing cyclists getting past. Eastbound just before the lights the Island is in the way forcing cyclists to merge with motors.

  • Garden Walk is two-way

    Garden Walk is a two way street for all but the last few metres at it's junction with Victoria Road. At that end there is a cycle bypass to the no-entry. It's a bodge up that only transport planners understand.

    I've experienced it myself, but a resident of the street tells me of her frequent problems with aggressive oncoming traffic (mostly van drivers) that barge at her as she rides up the road. When she tries to point out how the street works they don't listen and challenge her knowledge because of her french accent.

  • Cycle parking at the fire station development

    This new development is almost finished, but there is no obvious sign of cycle parking on the frontage - which I believe may be for shops - yet (and the back area is obviously not publicly accessible at the moment).

    Do we know what cycle parking is planned here?

  • Railway Route between Cambridge and Cherry Hinton

    The railway line from Cambridge to Newmarket turns out across Coldham's Common and right through the middle of Cherry Hinton, and then carries on passing to the north of Fulbourn.

    There are currently (2013) two main routes from the east of Cambridge to Cherry Hinton - the Tins and Snakey Path. However both have long very narrow sections involving pedestrian conflict.

    The railway line is single track - but satellite images show the bridges crossing Barnwell Road and Coldham's Lane were both built for dual track. So this means there should easily be enough room to accommodate a cycleway alongside the railway.

    This route could then connect up with the Chisholm Trail and provide a direct fast cycle route to and from the city and the Science Park area.

  • Cycle path with give ways

    The service entrance to the motorway services now has priority over the shared use path which runs parallel to the main road.
    I have contacted both Hampshire County Council and Test Valley Borough Council about this change in priorities, but neither has responded beyond a cursory "we have received your email".
    This is yet another example of through traffic being de-prioritised simply because it is on a cycle (or shared) path, rather than on a road.

  • University Arms hotel revamp

    The University Arms (next to the entrance to Parker's Piece) is planning a new frontage.

    This could have cycle access issues.

    Also this would be a good opportunity to push for a contraflow from Hobbs Pavilion to Regent Street.

  • Planning application 13/0646/FUL: Gonville Hotel

    Key problem: they are trying to create a new car entrance off Gresham Road in the neck of the cycleway.

    "Demolition of Gresham House, and refurbishment and extension of Gonville Hotel to provide an additional 43 bedrooms and new spa/treatment rooms, with internal and external remodelling of the existing hotel to create a new dining area and hotel entrance, and associated external works and landscaping"

  • Twickenham Bridge to Thames Path

    The cycleways along the Thames Path and along Ducks Walk are not connected with the south/east side cycleway across Twickenham Bridge and only to the north/west side cycleway via a long detour through Old Deer Park or along The Avenue.

    A ramped way down from the bridge would create a useful route for people into and out of Richmond town center that is currently only possible by using two flights of steps.

  • A316 car park entrance

    The carpark entrance cuts across the cycleway and has shallow corner radii encouraging fast entrance and exit speeds which are a danger to cyclists using the cycleway.

    The cycleway should be curved away from the roadway at the junction and a marked crossing put in place a cars length from the roadway allowing space for entering and exiting cars to giveway to cyclists moving along the cycleway.

  • Park Shot junction

    The entrance to Parkshot from the A316 cuts with a wide fast radii across the cycleway (as it becomes a narrow shared use pavement). Vehicles come at speed from the Circus and turn without seeing crossing cycles.

    With access to Parkshot from Clarence Street, this entrance could easily be closed to motor traffic.

  • Richmond Circus Kew Road south toucan crossing

    The tucan crossing is out of phase with the lights at Church Road meaning that traffic coming along the A316 into Kew Rd is not held at the tucan but is then stopped at Church Rd so that cyclists and pedestrians have to wait for traffic to enter Kew Rd.

    Re-phase the lights so that the tucan crossing is red for the roadway at the same time that it is red for the lights at Church Rd, so that there is a single green phase along the cycleway across the end of Kew Rd.

  • Richmond Circus pinch point

    The shared use pavement is pinched very tight at this point where pedestrians are crossing the road and cycles are going straight on.

    Visibility of pedestrians and bikes from Larkfield Rd is blocked by the building.

    Continue cycleway along Richmond Circus south side.
    Provide more cycle/pavement width by moving carriageway northwards or reducing to 2 lanes.

  • Lower Mortlake Road side roads

    All the sideroads between Richmond Circus and Manor Circus are a danger to cyclists on the cycleway.

    There is no warning to motorists that there will be crossing cyclists and the building angles make it hard to see if anything is coming.

    Turning traffic from the A316 can have an obscured view of the cycleway due to foliage.

    Decrease corner radii.
    Make road hump more pronounced.
    Make cycle surface colour continuous across roadway.
    Add markings across roadway.
    Add warning signage.
    Move give way lines back to before cycleway or add additional give way lines.

  • Manor Circus

    West side the cycleway terminates at the Manor Rd zebra crossing.

    East side it vanishes 20 meters from the junction at the Lower Richmond Rd zebra crossing.

    Path between is not shared use and is very narrow due to excessive road width on roundabout due to dedicated turning lane and large roundabout center.

  • Police refusing to take details of an accident over the phone

    A colleague has just come off the phone to the police, after being knocked off his bike on Hills Road. The Police are refusing to log this incident despite him being minorly injured and his bike being expensively damaged unless he comes into the Police Station in person to report it (he was cycling down Hills Road, person pulled out of side road without looking, in daylight and good visibility). As he works and lives near Addenbrooke's, this will take a great deal of his time, especially as he now has no transport, and he's just going "I can't be faffed, I've got work to do". This will also lead to him having to pay for the repairs to his bike, as, without an incident number, he cannot make an insurance claim.

    I note on our website the following advice: "If anyone is injured, the incident must be reported to the police. For minor injuries there may be little that they will do. However, they are obliged to record the incident so that it appears in statistics, and you will need an incident number from the police if any insurance claim is involved."

    I cannot believe that in the 21st Century, when I think we've had the telephone for over a hundred years, that people are required to physically visit the police station (of which there are fewer and fewer, and in many towns, hidden out of sight - my parents' nearest police station is now about 20 miles from where they live, despite living in a town of about 20000 people) to get an incident number.

    Is this true? If not, what can he/we do about the misinformation being peddled by the Police? If true, what can we do to drag our public servants (as a taxpayer, I help pay their wages, thus they are in effect my servants) into the 21st Century?

  • Elsinore Way/A316 - TFL consultation on removal of section of cycle track

    Elsinore Way junction with the A316 Lower Richmond Road

    Please find attached a letter that will be sent to local residents regarding proposed changes to the junction of Elsinore Way and the A316 Lower Richmond Road.

    We propose to cut back the kerb immediately to the east (upstream) of the junction, to allow a better turning circle and prevent turning vehicles coming onto the kerb and the cycle path. A shared cycle/pedestrian space will be marked around this junction. Please see the plan attached.

    We are consulting the local community for their opinions regarding the proposals and we would also like to know your views. The consultation is open until 21 June 2013.
